  James A. Olson Guitars
Olson SJ 1991 Maple/Spruce

FOR SALE: SJ Flamed Maple Cutaway
  ('91 ~ Good ~ Serial #289) $SOLD!

This is one of Jim's earlier works made from flamed maple with a spruce top (has yellowed over time). It belonged to a professional musician (one owner) who purchased it in 1992. Over its life it has been played at concerts and in the studio (multiple CDs).

Although it shows some road wear (its a player's guitar--and shouldn't Olsons be played and shared with others?), fundamentally it is in good condition: the neck setting, bridge and lower bout, combined, are all sound; a great setup. And here you have an Olson that has opened up over 10 years: sweet, clear and balanced.

Other appointments include a fingerboard bound with purfling lines which continue around the headstock; thick one-inch wide abalone fingerboard position markers; a colorful abalone rosette; gold Schaller tuners with ebony buttons. Underneath the saddle is an L. R. Baggs LB6 pickup (the entire saddle has an embedded pickup) with an L. R. Baggs "Micro Drive" pre-amp inside the body.

The body is bound with ivoroid with herringbone purfling on the top and back seam. The remainder of the body, on the sides, in the cutaway and endgraft, are inlaid with fine purfling.

See pictures: front ~ back close ~ cutaway ~ topside ~ neck ~ fingerboard inlay ~ label ~ headstock

The wear includes a few scratches on the lower bout (quarter-inch; down to the wood), also a half dozen very small dings. See pictures: lower bout left, mid and right. The guitar is minus its former pickguard (presently in the case string compartment)--but shows no major pick marks where the guard use to be. There is an eighth-inch (round) mark on the neck (down to the wood), located next to the fingerboard binding in the 2d position. There is also a small ding on the opposite side of the neck at the 5th position, and a very small pin-size ding on the heel. The upper side, toward the bottom has a one-inch scratch (in the wood); and on the opposite bottom side there is a deep scratch (one-inch), along with a couple of dings. The back has a few minor surface marks.

Although this SJ has its "beauty marks", it will be one Olson you will not be afraid to take out and play outside the home. And, its sound will not disappoint you.

OHSC included (shows road wear with a few marks).
