Guitars is privileged to now be able to offer guitars by master luthier
Sergei de Jonge! |
|

|
|
|
Sergei
de Jonge has been creating guitars since the early seventies. He apprenticed
with Jean Larrivee, when he was making only classical guitars by himself,
and Pat Lister. Sergei continues the tradition through building guitars
while teaching the art at his luthier school, located in Oshawa, Ontario,
Canada (near Toronto). Included in this tutelage are his children.
The eldest two, Joshia and Sagen, now have a reputation for making
fine instruments themselves (see our page on Joshia's
guitars). |

Sergei's
brother provides an excellent summary of his work, one that we whole
heartily agree with, and can not improve upon: |

"Over
the years I've seen my brother Sergei make a lot of guitars. I've
seen his luthiery develop from his initial apprenticeships with Jean-Claude
Larrivee and Pat Lister, through numerous Toronto basements, (including
my own, for a year)... His craft, through all this, has grown from
a quiet voice of quality and pride, to a quiet voice of quality and
pride; ...one which is making guitarists everywhere sit up and take
note. His uncanny ability to build a superior guitar has not been
dampened by his premise of building small wooden fortresses designed
to withstand earthquakes and airports... [His] craft seems imbued
with a guiding instinct; a fingertip communication with the wood which
gives him different specific directions for each guitar as it takes
shape. There is no formula; no real analysis. This is transcended
by the wood's ultimate intimacy with itself, and by an instinct grown
keen from constant use and trust." |

Sergei
de Jonge guitars, while "imbued with a guiding instinct",
are consistently precise in workmanship, balanced in tonal variety,
clear, articulate. His steel string acoustics ring with the sustain
of a bell, also with a punch, yet in a voice that is sweet and inspiring. |
